Cyprus: dozens of water projects frozen, residents complain about interruptions

The issue of unfinished hydraulic structures has been raised again in Cyprus. The Ministry of Water Resources reported that in the Stochastro area and in the Kondilion district, 46 projects remain in limbo, which were intended to strengthen the water supply and wastewater system. These include canals, pumping stations, treatment facilities, and other infrastructure elements.

Many of these projects are stuck in the early stages of construction. The reasons cited include prolonged bureaucratic procedures, lack of funding, and the need for additional approvals regarding land use and environmental issues.

Local residents express concern about the situation. According to them, unfinished works directly affect the quality of life: water supply interruptions increase, irrigation problems in rural areas worsen, and the efficiency of sewage systems remains low.

Authorities claim they are taking measures to accelerate the completion of projects. New tenders are planned in the near future, additional budget funds will be allocated, and control over contractors’ performance will be strengthened. According to the ministry’s estimates, some of the unfinished facilities may be put into operation within 12–18 months.
