Cyprus and Syria to be connected by new submarine internet cable by 2028

The new Ugarit 2 submarine cable connecting Cyprus and Syria is expected to enter service in early 2028. The approximately 240-kilometre cable will run between Pentaskinos in Cyprus and Tartus in Syria, creating a new direct internet connection between the two countries. The project is being implemented by Cyta, the Syrian Telecommunications Establishment and UNIFI Communications. Ugarit 2 is intended to replace the existing Ugarit cable, which has connected Cyprus and Syria since 1995 and has a capacity of 622 Mbps.

An agreement on the construction and maintenance of the new cable was signed in Damascus on 28 July. The project participants described it as the first major international infrastructure agreement concluded under Syria’s new economic policy. UNIFI says the new cable will help restore Syria’s connectivity with international digital networks.

Cyta CEO George Metsakis noted that the development of regional and international telecommunications infrastructure is important for strengthening reliable, high-speed connectivity in the Eastern Mediterranean.
