Cyprus promises to launch age verification online by early 2027
The authorities of the Republic of Cyprus have committed to developing and implementing a national online age-verification system by early 2027. The project is aimed at protecting minors from access to pornography and other harmful online content. The technical solution is being developed by the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy together with the Commissioner for Children’s Rights.
The main challenge in implementing the system lies in the need to comply with strict European data protection standards (GDPR). The mechanism being created must ensure accurate age verification of users without collecting their personal information and without tracking their digital footprint. Cyprus intends to draw on the experience of other EU countries that are already testing similar technologies in order to launch a fully functioning and legally secure system within the set timeframe.
