Cyprus to Receive Two More EU Aircraft for Wildfire Suppression

Under the European Civil Protection Mechanism, two additional firefighting aircraft will be sent to Cyprus to reinforce the national air fleet during the summer wildfire season. The aircraft, provided by other EU member states, will be based on the island and deployed for the rapid suppression of major fires both in Cyprus itself and, if necessary, in neighboring countries in the region.

The additional aerial support will bolster the existing resources of the Forestry Department, which have already been put on full alert due to the onset of June heat. Authorities remind the public that during the summer season there is a strict ban on lighting fires in non-specialized areas, burning dry grass, and using equipment that could cause sparks. If any smoke or fire is detected, residents and expatriates are asked to report it immediately by calling emergency numbers 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Unified Rescue Service).
