Cyprus to receive its first large-scale electricity storage systems in 2027

The Republic of Cyprus plans to commission its first large-scale electricity storage systems in early 2027. The authorities expect the new capacity to help stabilize the power system and expand the use of renewable energy sources.

Energy Minister Michalis Damianos said in Paphos that the installation of the equipment should be completed before the beginning of summer 2027. Contracts for the implementation of the projects have already been signed.

Initially, 125 megawatts of storage capacity will be added to the power system. In addition, private developers have already received permits to connect a further 150 megawatts, while the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) is separately implementing its own 180-megawatt project.

According to the minister, these projects will together enable the island’s power system to add hundreds of megawatts of storage capacity by the end of 2027.

The first battery units are expected to begin arriving in Cyprus in early 2027. The authorities consider the project an important step in modernizing the energy infrastructure and reducing dependence on conventional power generation.
