Cyprus Tightens Visa Requirements for Russian Nationals

The Republic of Cyprus has introduced stricter visa requirements for Russian citizens, making the process more complex and time-consuming than it used to be.

According to the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), the Cyprus Consulate recently circulated a document outlining new rules for applicants seeking a national visa. The updated requirements now closely resemble those for Schengen visas. However, it’s important to note that a Cypriot visa remains a national visa and does not grant access to Schengen-zone countries.

As stated in the document shared by ATOR, the application timeline for Cyprus visas has been extended. Travelers must now submit their applications at least 15 calendar days before their planned trip, compared to the previous window of 3–4 days before departure.

In addition to the extended timeline, the new requirements include:

• A statement from the Social Fund covering the past 10 years, complete with a digital signature.
• Detailed bank account statements showing all transactions from the last three months.
• A salary history from employers for the past six months, replacing the previously simpler requirement of a single letter confirming monthly income.

Moreover, applicants are now required to provide scans of all pages of their Russian passports with any marks or stamps, instead of just the title page and residency details.

Sponsorship letters must also include more comprehensive information, such as the intended destination, duration of the visit, and a detailed breakdown of expenses covered by the sponsor.

Industry experts predict that these stricter procedures are likely to deter Russian tourists from choosing Cyprus as their travel destination.
