Cypriot vessel attacked in the Strait of Hormuz

The container ship GFS Galaxy, sailing under the flag of Cyprus, came under attack in the Strait of Hormuz. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) made the statement, blaming Iranian forces for the incident.

According to the American side, a fire broke out on board after the attack, and the engine room was damaged, preventing the vessel from continuing its voyage. One crew member is reported missing.

Cypriot authorities said the deputy ministry of shipping is determining the circumstances of the incident and remains in contact with the shipping company. The remaining crew members were evacuated to a neighboring country. There were no Cypriot nationals among the seafarers.

Against the backdrop of the new escalation in the conflict, Iran announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most important shipping routes for the maritime transport of oil and cargo.
