Climate Brings Together: Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot Scientists Take the Same Stage for the First Time

Today, 8 June 2026, at 17:00, a joint panel discussion on climate change will be held in the conference hall of the Turkish Cypriot Chamber of Civil Engineers and Architects (KTMMOB) in Nicosia. The event is organised by KTMMOB together with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK).
During two sessions, experts including Professors Marina Neophytou, Halil Güven and other specialists will discuss the state of water resources, energy policy, sustainable development and the island’s adaptation to rising temperatures. The discussion will be held in English and will conclude with a question-and-answer session.
For Cyprus, which is at the epicentre of the Mediterranean climate crisis, environmental threats are shared. The organisers stress that the event has not only a scientific but also an important political dimension: amid the lack of progress in official negotiations, professional dialogue between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot sides remains one of the few formats for constructive engagement.
According to climate data, Europe is warming faster than other continents, while the Mediterranean is recording record levels of marine heatwaves, making the issue of the island’s ecosystem survival a priority for specialists from both communities.
