Cyprus police detain 20-year-old over 43 kg of khat found at Larnaca Airport in 2024
Cyprus police have detained a 20-year-old man suspected of illegally importing nearly 43 kg of khat. The drug was found in two unclaimed suitcases at Larnaca Airport back in February 2024, while the suspect himself was taken into custody on the evening of 8 September after arriving in Cyprus from abroad.

According to police, the two suitcases arrived at Larnaca Airport on 25 February 2024 and remained in the unclaimed baggage area for four days. On 29 February, when the luggage was being processed for return shipment, a total of 42 kg 950 g of khat plant material was found and seized inside.
The case was handled by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (ΥΚΑΝ) and the Department of Customs. The investigation is being continued by the Larnaca branch of ΥΚΑΝ, which also obtained the court warrant under which the man was arrested immediately upon arrival.
On 9 September, the suspect was brought before the Larnaca District Court. The court ordered that he be remanded in custody for five days to allow the investigative procedures to be completed.
Khat is a plant whose leaves contain cathine and cathinone, which are psychostimulants. In Cyprus, these substances are classified as controlled substances, and their import and circulation are prohibited.
