Summer holidays and the shortage of childcare: parents in Cyprus raise the alarm
As the summer season approaches, parents in Cyprus are once again facing a long-standing problem: the lengthy break in primary schools, which lasts almost 12 weeks. In total, primary schools on the island are closed for more than 18 weeks a year, including the Christmas, New Year and Easter holidays, as well as numerous religious and public holidays. Many parents are outraged that schools close so often, creating serious difficulties for working families that have no way to arrange childcare during this period.
Despite the criticism, the education community insists on the need for these holidays for both teachers and students, stressing that this time is important for recuperation. Possible solutions to the problem include expanding the network of affordable summer programs at schools, increasing state subsidies for childcare and providing incentives for schools to remain open longer. In addition, the argument about the “unbearable heat” is becoming less persuasive as more and more educational institutions are equipped with air conditioning systems. Until systemic changes are introduced, families are forced to find ways on their own to organize leisure time and ensure the safety of children during this long summer period.
