Limassol to receive an additional 10,000 cubic meters of water per day as early as next week
Testing of a new mobile desalination unit located in the area of the Garillis River is nearing completion in Limassol. The facility is expected to be commissioned no later than the beginning of next week and will provide the city with an additional 10,000 cubic meters of drinking water per day.
The project is being implemented by an Israeli contractor and provides for the treatment of water from local wells, followed by its supply to the city’s water system. According to Director of the Water Development Department Iliana Tofa-Christidu, earlier technical problems with the power supply have already been resolved, and specialists from Israel are carrying out final equipment checks.
The new installation will become the second mobile desalination system directly connected to Limassol’s water supply network. The first, located in the city port, is already operating at full capacity and produces 10,000 cubic meters of water daily. Launching the facility at Garillis will reduce the burden on other water sources, including the water treatment plant that receives water from the Kouris reservoir.
After the facility is commissioned, nine desalination plants will be operating in Cyprus. Mobile stations have previously been launched in Moni with a capacity of 15,000 cubic meters per day, in Potima-Kissonerga with 12,000 cubic meters, as well as the facility in Limassol port. In September, a tenth mobile installation is scheduled to be launched in the Episkopi area, which will be able to produce another 15,000 cubic meters of water daily.
The expansion of the desalination plant network is part of the state strategy to ensure Cyprus’s drinking water supply. Authorities expect that by 2027 the country’s main needs will be covered by desalinated water, which will make it possible to preserve reservoir stocks for agriculture.
Amid preparations for the summer season, the Water Development Department notes a stable water supply situation. Moreover, the previously imposed water supply cutbacks have been lifted, and supply volumes for consumers have been increased by 5–16% depending on the region.
