Driver caught speeding at 161 km/h on the Limassol–Paphos motorway

Cyprus police detained a 26-year-old driver who was travelling along the Limassol–Paphos motorway at 161 km/h at night, despite the speed limit being 100 km/h. He had neither a driving licence nor insurance.

According to police, at around 22:30, a motorway traffic police patrol on duty at a post in Agios Athanasios recorded a car travelling at 161 km/h instead of the maximum permitted speed of 100 km/h. The driver did not respond to signals to stop.

Police said the man continued driving “recklessly and dangerously”, ignoring repeated demands from the patrol. The car was eventually stopped on the old Paphos–Limassol road.

During the inspection, it was found that the 26-year-old driver had neither a valid driving licence nor an insurance policy. Alcohol and drug tests were negative. The man was detained, and the investigation is being carried out by the Kouklia police station (Kouklia).

That same night, police conducted raids across the island. A total of 850 vehicles and 1,162 people were checked, and 395 fines were issued for traffic violations, including 95 for speeding. Thirty-four drivers were caught driving under the influence, 23 vehicles were impounded and seven people were detained. Police said that such checks would continue daily.
