“People, we have arrived”: hackers announce an alien invasion through Brazil’s alert system

Residents of Brazil have experienced one of the most unusual cyberattacks in the country’s history. In the middle of the night, millions of people received emergency notifications on their phones with an alert signal that is normally used only when there is a real threat to life. But instead of a warning about a natural disaster or an industrial accident, mysterious messages about aliens and the word “misanthropy” appeared on their screens.

A night-time alarm for millions

The incident took place on the night of June 20. On the smartphones of residents of several Brazilian states, the emergency alert system Defesa Civil Alerta was triggered. Such notifications are of the highest importance and can activate a loud signal even on devices set to silent mode.

Many Brazilians woke up to the sharp sound and thought that an emergency had occurred in the country. However, instead of the usual warning, people saw strange messages. Some of them contained the phrase:

“Protect yourself: ALIEN ATTACK. People, we have arrived”.

Other notifications consisted of just one word — “Misanthropy”.

What does the mysterious word mean?

Interestingly, the word “misanthropy” itself became the most widely circulated message during the incident.

Misanthropy means dislike or hatred of humanity. Why the attackers chose this particular term is still unknown. However, it became one of the most talked-about topics in the Brazilian internet after the incident.

Some users suggested that the word was part of a kind of message from the hackers. Others saw it as a hint at a science-fiction plot about a hostile extraterrestrial civilization.

Authorities said it was a hacker attack

After the first reports, the Brazilian government was forced to shut down the alert system and begin an investigation.

According to the official version, unknown individuals gained unauthorized access to the state civil defense platform and used it to mass-send false messages.

Why did rumors about UFOs appear?

The clips quickly racked up millions of views. Users argued over whether the footage was real, created with artificial intelligence, or simply a montage.

After the “alien attack” messages appeared, many connected the two events. The internet began spreading theories that the authorities were supposedly hiding some information about UFOs.

However, as of now, there is no evidence of any connection between the viral videos and the alert system hack.

Conspiracy theories multiply

Supporters of conspiracy theories paid special attention to the fact that the word “misanthropy” was being distributed much more widely than the alien messages.

As a result, a version emerged suggesting that the mass sending of the mysterious word may have been used to distract public attention from the alien messages. Some users even suggested that the person who took responsibility for the hack may have done so deliberately to hide the “real reason” for what happened.

There is no evidence for these theories, but they continue to be actively discussed on social media.

Why was this case so important?

Experts note that the main problem is not the alien messages at all.

Emergency alert systems are designed to warn the population about floods, hurricanes, fires, and other threats. If people start treating such notifications as a joke or prank, it could lead to serious consequences during a real emergency.
