Widespread power outages occur in Cyprus
Power supply disruptions were reported in different parts of Cyprus on the morning of 21 August. Some areas of Limassol and the suburbs of Nicosia were temporarily left without electricity. The Electricity Authority of Cyprus website also experienced access problems — users received a 503 error, indicating server overload.
According to Hara Kousiappa, a representative of the electricity transmission system operator, the disruption was caused by a communication problem between the solar power plants and the coordination centre. As a result, the solar plants were disconnected from the automated supply system.
This led to the loss of around 100 MW of generating capacity, temporarily cutting off electricity supply in some areas.
Specialists are currently working to reconnect the solar power plants to the grid. Power supply is gradually being restored in the affected areas.
