If the idea of waking up to the sound of the Aegean Sea, strolling through the picturesque streets of a Greek island and spending your days in the company of dozens of cats sounds like a dream holiday, then such an opportunity really exists.

Animal welfare organization Syros Cats, working on the Greek island of Syros, has announced that applications for its 2027 volunteer program will open in autumn 2026. Participants are offered free accommodation, utilities and breakfast in exchange for helping care for stray cats.

Volunteer duties include feeding the animals, cleaning the premises and cages, caring for sick cats, socializing kittens and helping with the organization’s day-to-day work. The schedule is around five hours a day, five days a week. After that, participants have plenty of free time left to explore the island, relax on the beaches and enjoy life by the sea.

However, there are a few conditions. Volunteers must be independent, physically active and ready to stay for at least one month. Preference is given to people over 25, and experience working with animals or veterinary training is considered an advantage. At the same time, the program accepts only about four people from different countries around the world.

It is important to note that the popular social media story about “free life in paradise” is not entirely accurate. The organization does provide accommodation and breakfast, but volunteers pay for travel to the island and most of their personal expenses, including food during their stay, themselves.

Interest in the program has been so high that recruitment for 2026 is already closed. According to Greek media, after the information went viral on social networks, the organization received thousands of applications from all over the world and is now compiling a waiting list. The next chance to get to the island will come after registration opens for the 2027 season.

According to local sources, around 3,000 stray cats live on Syros, so the volunteers’ work plays an important role in their treatment, sterilization and protection. For many participants, this is not just an opportunity to live by the sea, but a chance to combine travel with real help for animals.
