Cyprus Justice Ministry to cut protection for officials due to staff shortage
The Ministry of Justice and Public Order of the Republic of Cyprus has decided to substantially reduce the number of police officers assigned to the personal protection of current and former government officials, as well as politicians. The measure is driven by an acute staffing shortage in law enforcement agencies.
The officers who are freed up will be reassigned to street patrols, public order duties and to strengthening key departments facing personnel shortages. A special ministry committee will conduct an individual risk assessment for each protected person in order to keep state protection only for those who truly face a real threat.
