A major drug supply network was dismantled in Cyprus
The Republic of Cyprus Police reported the dismantling of a major network involved in the import and distribution of narcotic substances. During a series of operations that began on June 19, officers from the Anti-Drug Service (ΥΚΑΝ) uncovered 17 criminal cases, detained 21 suspects and seized around 60 kilograms of dried opium poppy capsules.
The operations were carried out across the island. Two more people have been placed on the wanted list.
According to police, 16 of the 17 criminal cases have already been referred to court and sent for consideration by the Assize Court. All 21 detainees remain in custody.
During the investigation, law enforcement also obtained additional evidence against three defendants. The investigation believes that over the past three months they imported several more consignments of opium poppy to Cyprus. In connection with this, new charges have been brought against them.
At the same time, police contacted a foreign company through which the disputed goods were being sent to Cyprus. After the measures taken, the possibility of delivering such shipments to the island was stopped.
Police stressed that operations to identify and disrupt drug supply channels will continue.
