SafeCY app to start sending emergency alerts to phones in Cyprus
The SafeCY app in Cyprus has received an update: users can now receive emergency notifications about potential dangers directly on their phones.
This was announced by the Ministry of Interior of Cyprus and the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy.
With the new push notification feature, civil defense services will be able to simultaneously send alerts to all app users or people in a specific area if a threat arises.
Currently, the app has been downloaded by more than 170,000 people via Google Play and the App Store.
Authorities have urged residents to install SafeCY or update it, as well as to allow the app to send notifications and access geolocation.
In the event of an emergency alert, citizens are advised to follow civil defense instructions, go to a basement, or stay indoors away from windows.
Deputy Minister of Digital Policy Nicodemos Damianou noted that the use of technology will help create a multi-layered public warning system, complementing existing sirens and SMS messages.
