Cyprus Has the Lowest Percentage of Elderly People in the EU

The Republic of Cyprus has been recognized as the country with the lowest percentage of elderly population among the 27 member countries of the European Union.

The EU countries with the highest proportions of elderly populations are Italy at 24.5%, Finland at 23.6%, and Portugal at 23.3%.

The countries with the lowest proportions of elderly population are Cyprus at 15.2%, Luxembourg at 15.4%, and Ireland at 15.5%.

In 1989, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) established "July 11, 1987," when the world's population reached 5 billion, as "World Population Day." Each year on this special day, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) selects a theme to address current population-related issues and works to raise awareness of these problems.

According to UN estimates, the country with the highest population in 2023 was India, with 1,428,627,663 people, followed by China with 1,425,671,352 people, and the United States with 339,996,563 people. These three countries accounted for 39.7% of the world's total population.

The countries with the highest proportions of child population (ages 0 to 17) in 2023 were Niger and the Central African Republic, each at 55.5%, followed by Chad at 54.2% and Mali at 54%.

The countries with the lowest proportions of child population were the Republic of Korea at 13.9%, Japan at 14.1%, and Singapore at 14.2%.
