AI-based weather services for farmers and emergency warnings are being developed in Cyprus

The Meteorological Service of the Republic of Cyprus, with financial support from the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, has begun developing two digital services based on artificial intelligence. As the head of the service, Philippos Tymvios, said on 11 June, the first prototypes of the systems will be presented by the end of 2026. The full launch of the platforms, which are being developed by the private sector with the possibility of later commercialization, is scheduled for 2028, although if testing is successful, deployment could take place earlier.

The first application is being developed specifically for the agricultural sector and will generate personalized recommendations for farmers. By analyzing the risks of frost, drought or rain, the system will suggest the optimal time for treating crops and calculate the exact amount of irrigation needed, which will significantly reduce water use during periods of sufficient rainfall. The second service is intended for the general public: it will process radar and weather-station data in real time, identifying the formation of dangerous thunderstorm fronts and downpours before they appear in standard forecasts. This initiative is being implemented within the framework of the pan-European standards of the Eumetnet network, which brings together 33 national meteorological services and supports the Meteoalarm global warning platform.
