Speed limits of 20 or 30 km/h introduced in 19 settlements across four districts of Cyprus
Nineteen localities in four districts of Cyprus have been designated as areas with reduced speed limits. In 11 of them, the new rules have already come into force. The Department of Public Works said that the creation of reduced-speed zones is primarily aimed at improving road safety, reducing the number of road accidents and protecting pedestrians and other vulnerable road users.
In addition, the new restrictions are expected to help reduce pollution and improve the quality of the urban environment.
To introduce a reduced-speed zone, approval must first be obtained from the municipal council. The proposal is then reviewed and approved by the technical committee of the Central Transport Problems Resolution Authority of the Department of Public Works, and the consent of the Chief of Police is also required.
Municipalities consult with local residents and inform residents and businesses affected by the new rules.
The Department of Public Works noted that it expects new applications from local authorities to create additional reduced-speed zones in the near future.
