Two e-scooter riders killed in Cyprus in seven months

Since the beginning of 2026, two e-scooter riders have been killed in road accidents in Cyprus. That is the same number as in the previous four years combined.

Both victims were foreign nationals, and both fatal incidents occurred in Limassol. In addition, more than 40 e-scooter users have been injured in accidents this year.

The latest fatal incident occurred several days ago. A 24-year-old Syrian national died from injuries sustained after being hit by a car on 26 July.

Against the backdrop of a rising number of accidents, police are proposing that e-scooters be moved from the carriageway onto pavements where possible, with dedicated lanes provided.

Earlier, Parliament passed a law allowing the police and municipal authorities to impound e-scooters for serious offences. However, the relevant decree by the Minister of Transport has still not been signed, so these measures are not yet being enforced.

The introduction of mandatory e-scooter registration, with an individual number assigned to each device, is also being considered. Mandatory insurance is being discussed separately, as in some cases injured pedestrians were unable to receive compensation because there was no insurance coverage.

Under amendments to the legislation adopted earlier, e-scooters may only be used by people over the age of 17. The maximum permitted speed has been increased from 20 to 25 km/h. In addition, owners are required to prevent minors from using e-scooters.
