Cyprus Bans Pets from Public Shelters
The Cyprus Civil Defence has banned domestic animals from public shelters. The decision was attributed to the high number of people using such shelters, as well as risks for those who fear animals or suffer from allergies.
Maria Papa, the director of the service, explained this on the Alpha Kalimera program. According to her, shelters must be prepared to accommodate a large number of citizens, and the presence of animals could create additional complications.
However, authorities are already considering the possibility of easing the ban. Options are being discussed to designate specific shelters where pets would be allowed, though a final decision has not yet been reached.
Maria Papa also acknowledged that the ban has caused dissatisfaction among residents, as many stated they would rather stay at home than leave their pets behind.
An exception has been made only for service and guide dogs, which will be permitted to stay in the shelters.
