Complaints over beach lounger and umbrella prices are rising in Cyprus
As the peak summer season approaches in Cyprus, complaints from holidaymakers about unreasonably high prices for renting beach equipment have become more frequent. By law, the maximum cost of renting one sunbed or umbrella is strictly limited and amounts to 2.5 euros per item (that is, 7.5 euros for a standard set of two sunbeds and an umbrella).
However, many beach bars and operators are bypassing these rules. They claim to provide “enhanced comfort services,” install exclusive luxury sunbeds and charge from 20 to 100 euros per day for them, or force customers to make a minimum order for a large amount at the bar.
Local authorities and the beach management committee remind that municipalities must retain areas where equipment is rented strictly at the state tariff. Holidaymakers are urged to report any violations and overpricing to local municipal authorities.
