Nicosia removes abandoned cars: 2,300 vehicles taken away
The Nicosia Municipality is continuing its campaign to remove abandoned cars from the city’s streets. So far, around 2,300 vehicles have been removed, while approximately 4,000 more cars are still awaiting removal.
Authorities note that abandoned cars not only spoil the city’s appearance, but also pose a potential fire hazard, pollute the environment and often become targets for vandalism or the theft of parts.
Such vehicles are found in various locations — on streets, side roads, vacant lots, private properties and open areas. In some cases, owners leave the cars up for sale, but after standing unused for a long time, the vehicles deteriorate.
Once an abandoned car is identified, a special notice is left for the owner. If the vehicle is not removed within three weeks, it may be sold at auction or sent for recycling.
The municipality removes the vehicles through a private company selected following a tender. The city receives 200 euros for each vehicle removed, as the cars are sent for recycling.
Authorities stress that simply moving a vehicle to another street or plot within the city does not count as resolving the violation — the vehicle must be taken to a legal, enclosed location.
