New Cyprus Archaeological Museum to open later, but without a budget increase

Construction of the new Cyprus Archaeological Museum, one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the country’s history, may be completed a year later than planned. The consortium implementing the project has requested an extension of the works until 2027, but, unusually for major construction projects in Cyprus, no budget increase is planned.

The project cost remains at 144 million euros, as originally agreed. Despite the delay, project representatives stress that this is an exceptionally complex facility, considered the largest construction project ever carried out on the island in a single phase.

During an ознакомительная tour of the construction site, the project manager jokingly remarked that the site had “all of Cyprus’s scaffolding assembled there,” underscoring the scale of the work being carried out. According to the information available, there is complete mutual understanding between the state and the contractor, and any technical difficulties that arise are being resolved in the ordinary course of work.

Construction is being carried out by the Iacovou – Cyfield Joint Venture consortium, and the architectural concept was created by architect Theoni Xanthi, who won an international competition.

The future museum is being positioned as a state-of-the-art building with minimal environmental impact. The complex, covering about 30,000 square meters, will include five levels, including two underground floors, exhibition spaces, restoration workshops, educational centers, restaurants, cafes and storage areas for archaeological finds.

A distinctive feature of the project will be three themed exhibition buildings — “Place,” “Sea” and “World” — as well as a large public square with green areas and open spaces for visitors. The building design includes modern seismic protection systems, dozens of elevators, fire protection systems and hundreds of specialized display cases for storing and exhibiting artifacts.

Once completed, the new Archaeological Museum is expected to become one of the largest cultural centers in the Eastern Mediterranean and a new landmark of Cyprus.
