iPhone Photography Awards 2026 winners announced: the best shots once again proved that talent matters more than the camera

The organizers of the iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) have announced the winners of one of the most prestigious international mobile photography competitions. For 19 years, photographers from around the world have taken part in it, and the essential rule has remained unchanged — all entries must be shot exclusively on an iPhone, without the use of professional cameras.

This year, the jury reviewed thousands of images from more than 140 countries, selecting the best works across dozens of categories — from landscapes and architecture to portraits, travel, and street photography.

The winners proved that the age of a smartphone does not matter

One of the most talked-about entries in the competition was a photograph by Hungarian photographer Gellért Gombai, who took first place in the “Photographer of the Year” category. The black-and-white image of two children resting after playing badminton was shot on an iPhone X, released back in 2017.

This result became yet another reminder that expressive photography depends not so much on the number of megapixels or the cost of the device, but on the ability to spot the moment, frame the composition properly, and work with light.

Among the winners were also authors who shot with both the latest iPhone models and smartphones from previous generations.

A competition that changed the perception of mobile photography

When IPPAWARDS launched in 2007, the idea of holding an international competition for photos taken on a phone seemed unusual. At the time, smartphone cameras lagged significantly behind even compact cameras.

Today, the situation has changed dramatically. Thanks to larger sensors, computational photography, and image-processing algorithms, modern iPhones make it possible to achieve professional-level shots. The winning works from the competition are regularly featured in global media, included in exhibitions, and become part of the portfolios of well-known photographers.

Why the competition is considered special

IPPAWARDS stands out for focusing not on the device’s technical specifications, but on the artistic value of the image. The jury evaluates composition, emotion, subject matter, light, and the author’s ability to tell a story in a single frame.

At the same time, excessive image processing is not encouraged. Basic color correction is acceptable, but the photo must remain a photograph rather than a digital illustration.

Interesting facts

IPPAWARDS is considered the world’s first international competition entirely dedicated to iPhone photography.

Over nearly two decades of the competition’s existence, entries have been submitted by authors from more than 140 countries.

On multiple occasions, winning photographs were taken on iPhones that were 5–8 years old at the time of the competition.

Many of the laureates’ images were later exhibited in art galleries and published in international media outlets.

The story of IPPAWARDS 2026 once again reminds us that an outstanding shot is not created by the most expensive camera. Today, a smartphone can become a fully fledged creative tool, but it is the photographer who decides whether an ordinary moment becomes a true work of art.
