In the Republic of Cyprus, approximately 13,000 people, including children, suffer from bulimia and anorexia. These figures do not include individuals dealing with other eating disorders, such as compulsive overeating.
This information was provided to Parliament by the Health Insurance Organization.
According to the Fileleftheros newspaper, the public healthcare system has registered 1,166 children and 2,997 adults diagnosed with bulimia and anorexia. Additionally, 976 children and 7,904 adults are in the early stages of eating disorders and are receiving necessary assistance.
The Ministry of Health and the State Health Services Organization announced that next year's budget will include a fund to employ psychologists to assist these individuals. Procedures are also underway in the private sector to establish a center specializing in managing people with eating disorders aged 17 and older.
During the meeting, there was also discussion on the prevention and early diagnosis of these conditions, primarily by healthcare professionals, with a particular emphasis on the role of the Ministry of Education.
