Cyprus hotels launch promotions for locals amid tourism downturn
In the summer season of 2026, the hotel sector of the Republic of Cyprus faced a noticeable decline in the number of foreign tourists, caused by geopolitical instability in the Middle East. According to data from the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat), tourist arrivals fell by 13.3% in the first five months of the year (to 1.16 million people versus 1.34 million in 2025). Against this backdrop, hoteliers are redirecting their marketing toward the domestic market, focusing on local residents and last-minute bookings.
Tourist flow dynamics and current occupancy:
— Depth of the decline. The most critical drop in arrivals was recorded in spring: in March, the flow plunged by 30.7%, and in April — by 27.6%. In May, the situation stabilized (455,680 visits, which is 4.9% less than the figure for the same period last year).
— Situation in the regions. In June, average hotel occupancy in Famagusta (Ayia Napa, Protaras) stands at 60%, and in Paphos — around 70%, which is significantly below the usual 90% for this period. Limassol retains a more stable position thanks to its developed business tourism. The president of the Cyprus Hotels Association (PASYXE), Thanos Michaelides, has officially described 2026 as a «difficult year for the industry».
Pricing policy and promotions for local residents:
Industry associations say there will be no across-the-board (horizontal) reductions in accommodation prices. This is due to a sharp rise in hotels' operating costs for electricity, raw material purchases and staff wages.
— The director of the Cyprus Association of Tourism Enterprises (STEK), Hrisemili Psyloni, explained that hotels are partially absorbing these costs themselves without passing them on to customers, but room for discounts is limited.
— Instead of cutting base rates, targeted promotions and special offers for island residents are being launched. PASYXE Director General Christos Angelides urged local residents to monitor hotels' social media pages and websites directly in order to find attractive targeted rates.
Prospects and international assessments:
Despite a weak start to the year, experts note signs of a gradual recovery in demand. According to analytics company Lighthouse, the number of search queries for Cyprus hotels rose by 29% in the second week of June compared with the first. Muskita Hotels Commercial Director Nik Aristou confirmed a sharp normalization in the trend after the March drop in bookings. Tourism Minister Kostas Koumis links the emerging balance to revised travel advisories in a number of European countries, although the UK Foreign Office still describes the situation in the wider region as unstable.
