Construction of road from Tombs of the Kings to Coral Bay delayed by more than a year

Construction of the four-lane road from the Tombs of the Kings in Kato Paphos to Coral Bay in Peyia is being delayed by more than a year. Government services unexpectedly demanded a feasibility study for the project, although no such requirement had arisen during the previous 18 months of preparations.

The project concerns an approximately 8-km section along the coast, where almost 40% of the Paphos district’s tourist facilities are concentrated. In some places, the existing road has neither street lighting nor pavements.

The first project meeting was held in the summer of 2025 at the Ministry of Transport, and the second took place in Peyia in early September; meetings were also held in Nicosia and at the Akamas municipality. Akamas Mayor Marinos Lamprou previously said that work was due to begin in the second half of 2026. No new timeline has been announced.

In Paphos, the decision was described as unjustified and unclear. The Paphos district organization of AKEL said that instead of moving on to construction in 2026, the project was once again being sent back to studies and bureaucratic procedures.

“Paphos does not need additional studies to confirm the need for the project. What is needed is political will, decisions and implementation,” the party said in a statement. AKEL called on the district’s parties and local authorities to act together: the road is important for road safety, easing traffic congestion and the development of tourism.
