Schedule shift: opening of the new Cyprus Archaeological Museum delayed until 2027

Construction of the new Archaeological Museum in Nicosia, which will become the country’s largest cultural landmark, is officially being delayed by one year. Under the updated schedule, completion of the construction phase of the project is now expected by the end of 2027 instead of the originally planned mid-2026. An important aspect of the postponement is that the project is still being implemented within the approved budget of 144 million euros, without additional financial costs.

The main reasons for the schedule adjustment were organizational difficulties, including disputes with contractors, as well as logistical challenges in supplying unique materials such as specialized architectural glass, which is produced in only a few countries worldwide. After construction work is completed in 2027, it will take another 18 months or so to create the museum exhibitions and transport and install more than 6,500 artifacts, so the complex is not expected to open to the general public before the second half of 2029. The 40,000-square-meter museum, being built opposite the parliament building, is designed as a modern cultural hub bringing together the island’s history from the Neolithic era to the Roman period.
