A 6 MW solar park in Polemidia has run into EAC’s overloaded substation in Ypsonas

The 6 MW photovoltaic park being developed by the Municipality of Polemidia in Limassol together with the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) has run into a lack of grid capacity: the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) substation in Ypsonas is overloaded and cannot accommodate new generation.

This became known after a meeting between CUT Rector Panayiotis Zafiris and Polemidia Mayor Andreas Theodorou. The mayor said that all other procedures had been completed and that 6 MW of capacity had already been allocated to the project. The municipality is urging EAC to accelerate the substation’s upgrade.

The park will be built on municipal land under an agreement signed in May 2024. The electricity will be used for municipal buildings and street lighting, and should also give residents who cannot install solar panels on their own properties access to renewable energy.

The meeting also addressed CUT’s third development hub in the Vereggaria area. Of the 500 places in the student residence, 150 rooms are being rented out this year, with a further 350 due to open in September 2027. The School of Engineering and Technology building, the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence, the technology park and sports facilities are scheduled for completion by June 2027.

An architectural competition is being prepared jointly with the Research and Innovation Foundation for the new building of the School of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management. The campus development is supported by the European Investment Bank and the Council of Europe Development Bank.
