Police Officer Suspended from Duty After Crash in Nicosia
A 44-year-old police officer involved in a major road accident in Nicosia has been temporarily suspended from duty. The decision was taken on the orders of the Deputy Chief of Police of Cyprus.
The accident occurred on the morning of 16 July at the roundabout near Nicosia General Hospital. The officer’s car, which he was driving while off duty, collided with two vehicles. Following the impact, two cars caught fire and were completely destroyed, while the third was damaged.
All three drivers were taken to hospital, where they received medical attention.
Testing showed that the alcohol concentration in the officer’s breath was 59 mcg, compared with the legal limit of 22 mcg. It was also found that the vehicle did not have a valid insurance policy.
Criminal and disciplinary investigations into the police officer are ongoing.
