Cyprus police uncover major mafia conspiracy
Law enforcement authorities of the Republic of Cyprus, during an investigation into the activities of criminal groups, uncovered detailed plans for preparing a series of contract killings. As part of operational measures in Paphos, a forty-three-year-old suspect was detained; during a search, detailed maps marked with routes and locations in Limassol and Nicosia were found. Investigators established that these graphic schemes were used to surveil potential victims from the criminal milieu.
According to law enforcement officials, the detained man is closely linked to an underground network engaged in the illegal trafficking of weapons and coordinated the actions of the perpetrators. The materials found indicate a direct connection between the suspect and the preparation of both past high-profile assassination attempts on the island and new attacks planned as part of a struggle over spheres of influence. Police are currently continuing to examine the seized digital and paper materials in order to identify all accomplices in the criminal network.
