Police to step up road checks ahead of August 15 long weekend

Cyprus Police will step up road checks ahead of the long weekend associated with August 15. Traffic is expected to increase on motorways, as well as on roads leading to mountainous and coastal areas.

Michalis Michael, a representative of the Police Headquarters Communications Department, said that the necessary operational plans had been prepared for the holiday period. Police officers will be present on the roads to carry out checks and regulate traffic where necessary.

Particular attention will be paid to offences that most often lead to serious and fatal road accidents: speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, failure to wear seat belts and failure to wear a protective helmet, as well as using a mobile phone while driving.

Daily checks are carried out regardless of the holiday period. In addition, the pan-European Roadpol campaign, aimed at combating speeding, is taking place in Cyprus from August 3 to 9.

Police have also stepped up checks and awareness efforts concerning personal mobility devices, including electric scooters.

Police urged drivers to exercise caution, behave responsibly on the road and respect other road users, especially amid the expected increase in traffic.
