UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Begins Work in Cyprus

Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, will officially begin her duties on May 12. She is expected to arrive on the island later this month.

According to local media, Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides announced on Sunday that, following discussions with the envoy, a preliminary meeting has been set for May 27-29. The exact date of her visit is anticipated to be confirmed soon.

It’s important to note that in early May, UN Secretary-General António Guterres reappointed Maria Angela Holguín Cuéllar as his personal representative in Cyprus.

Starting May 12, she will take on the critical mission of facilitating the resolution of the Cyprus issue and finding common ground for the resumption of talks.

Maria Angela brings a wealth of experience to the role, having served as Colombia's Foreign Minister among other notable diplomatic positions. Additionally, António Guterres has arranged an informal meeting on Cyprus for late July, following a similar summit held in Geneva on March 17-18.

During the recent negotiations, both parties agreed to implement several initiatives, including the opening of crossing points, the creation of a Technical Committee for Youth Affairs, and other projects across the buffer zone and the entire island.
