Electricity consumption in Cyprus reaches record high: system operating at its limit
Cyprus is facing difficult days for its power system due to a record rise in electricity consumption and the failure of two generating units.
As Haris Zavallis, assistant director of the National Energy Control Centre, reported, the system came under serious strain after one of the 105 MW generating units at the Vasilikos power station was taken offline.
According to him, the situation could stabilise if the generating unit at the Dhekelia power station is brought back into operation. This would make it possible to meet demand and maintain a small reserve. Otherwise, the power system will only be able to cope with the load at the limit of its capabilities.
The previous day, electricity consumption in Cyprus set a new all-time record: the figure reached 1321 MW during the day and 1083 MW at night.
Another record is expected today: daytime consumption is forecast to approach 1350 MW, while during the evening peak hours it may reach 1095 MW.
