Fire near homes in Prodromi, Paphos, contained without aerial assistance

A fire that broke out on Monday afternoon on the outskirts of the Prodromi community in the municipality of Polis Chrysochous has been contained. The fire started near residential homes, in the area between Prodromi and the village of Neo Chorio in the Paphos district.

Two forestry firefighting vehicles were dispatched to the scene — one from the Akamas observation post and one from the Drousia forest station. Because the fire was close to built-up areas, the authorities activated the “Astrapí” (“Lightning”) plan and requested assistance from aerial firefighting units.

In the end, it was not necessary to deploy aircraft: ground crews managed to stop the fire from spreading, and the request for aerial support was withdrawn. During the operation, firefighters protected the homes standing near the fire, and no injuries or damage have been reported.

Forestry Department crews remained at the scene to fully secure the area and prevent a recurrence. The cause of the fire has not been disclosed. Prodromi and Neo Chorio are located near the Akamas peninsula, home to the Akamas National Forest Park.
