Cyprus firefighters respond to 47 calls in 24 hours after heavy rains

Cyprus Fire Service received 47 calls over the past 24 hours, service spokesman Andreas Kettis said. Of these, 15 were related to fires, 30 to special operations, while two other calls turned out to be false alarms.

After the heavy rain, crews pumped water out of basements. In Larnaca, they pumped water out of the basement of a residential building and moved two cars from there; another basement was drained in Paphos. In the Famagusta district, firefighters cleared a blocked drain.

At 21:41 on Friday, a call was received about a car that had caught fire inside a metal garage in Strovolos. A neighbour extinguished the flames with a garden hose before the crew arrived; firefighters inspected the vehicle and fully extinguished the fire. According to preliminary information, the car was set on fire deliberately.
