An elderly woman and her grandson are living in a container without water or electricity
AKEL MP Argyrentoula Ioannou spoke about the harsh living conditions of an elderly woman and her grandson in Limassol and criticised the government and the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare.
According to her, the grandmother and grandson lost their home after their property was seized by a banking institution. They are now living in a container in extremely difficult conditions. Ioannou claims that the relevant state services were informed about the situation about a week ago, but the necessary assistance has still not been provided. According to the MP, there is no water in the container, making it impossible to use the shower and sink; there is also no electricity or lighting, refrigerator or bed.
She also said that the grandmother and grandson have been waiting for state intervention since last year. Ioannou publicly called on the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare to personally visit the family’s place of residence and see the conditions in which the two people are living.
The MP linked the case to the broader issue of housing policy and the protection of socially vulnerable citizens, stating that, in her view, the state is failing to provide the necessary assistance to people who find themselves in a difficult situation.
