Cyprus government to allocate €1.65 million to support pig farmers
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has approved a financial support programme worth €1.65 million for pig farmers. The funds will be used to compensate losses resulting from the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease.
As Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou said, the assistance is intended to compensate for culled piglets. The amount of compensation will be calculated based on the number of sows on each farm.
Compensation will amount to up to €50 for each culled piglet, while the maximum payment to any one farm will not exceed €250,000.
According to the minister, the programme was developed jointly with the Pig Farmers’ Association and is part of a package of measures to support the sector. The possibility of providing such assistance was envisaged by a government decision as early as 16 March 2026, and the rules for implementing the programme have now been approved.
