Government allocates €1.17 million in compensation for farmers
The Government of the Republic of Cyprus has approved compensation payments totalling up to €1.17 million for agricultural producers affected by extreme weather events and natural disasters in 2025–2026.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, compensation will be paid to producers whose crops and agricultural infrastructure were damaged by adverse weather conditions.
Payments are provided for damage caused to:
- winter potato crops;
- citrus trees;
- avocado trees;
- olive trees;
- loquats;
- agricultural infrastructure.
In addition, compensation will be paid for damage caused to banana plantations by a tornado, as well as for losses resulting from fires on agricultural land and at agricultural facilities.
Approximately 610 farmers are expected to receive financial assistance. Payments will be made through the Agricultural Production Protection and Insurance Fund.
The ministry also said that, thanks to improvements in administrative procedures, the compensation payment period had been reduced by approximately two months. This will enable affected producers to receive the necessary financial support more quickly.
According to ministry representatives, work to support the agricultural sector will continue, including through measures aimed at reducing the consequences of the climate crisis and extreme weather events.
