Cyprus President Discussed Resumption of Negotiations with the National Council

On June 22, President Nikos Christodoulides informed the National Council about preparations for the informal enlarged “5+1” conference to relaunch negotiations on the Cyprus settlement from where they stopped in 2017. UN Secretary-General António Guterres hopes to achieve progress before the end of his mandate in December 2026. New political forces attended the meeting for the first time, including Fidias Panayiotou and Odysseas Michaelides.

The government spokesperson categorically rejected the possibility of compromises between a two-state model and a bizonal federation, stressing that a solution is possible strictly within the framework of UN resolutions. Political parties acknowledged the new momentum, but their positions differed: DISY called for the appointment of an EU special envoy, AKEL for a demonstration of firm political will, while ELAM opposed a federal scenario.
