The President will hold a series of meetings on the foot-and-mouth disease situation and farmers’ demands
Two consecutive meetings will be held on Tuesday at the Presidential Palace, devoted to the foot-and-mouth disease situation, measures to combat the disease and issues raised by livestock and agricultural organisations. This was announced by government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
At the first meeting, the President of the Republic will hear a report from the epidemiological team and the Veterinary Services on the current situation. The participants will also assess the effectiveness of the measures already taken, including support programmes for livestock farmers. The discussion will be attended by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, as well as the director general of the relevant ministry.
This will be followed by a second meeting with representatives of livestock and agricultural organisations. It will examine the sector’s problems and proposals, including the issues raised by the organisation “Voice of Livestock Farmers” and by participants in the recent protests.
According to Letymbiotis, the discussion will take place within the framework of the current legislation and established protocols. The main purpose of the meeting is to ensure an open exchange of views, give organisations the opportunity to present their proposals and ensure that all raised issues are considered on the basis of factual data.
The authorities expect that dialogue with sector representatives will make it possible to define further steps to address the consequences of the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak and to support agricultural producers.
