Final decision made to launch gas field off the coast of Cyprus

TotalEnergies and Eni have taken the final investment decision to develop the Cronos gas field, located in offshore Block 6 within the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Cyprus.

The field was discovered in 2022, while its reserves were confirmed during subsequent studies in 2024. The project will become Cyprus’s first major gas field to move into commercial development.

TotalEnergies and Eni will implement the project on an equal basis — each company holds a 50% participating interest, with Eni acting as the field operator.

Gas will be produced through four subsea wells. It will then be transported via a subsea pipeline to Egypt, where it will be liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal before being supplied to the European market.

Production is expected to begin in 2028. Planned output will amount to around 500 million cubic feet of gas per day, equivalent to approximately 2.8 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.

The companies noted that the project will make use of Egypt’s existing infrastructure, accelerating the start of production and reducing implementation costs.

The development of the Cronos field is viewed as an important stage in the development of the Eastern Mediterranean gas industry and could create opportunities for further resource development in offshore Block 6.
