Republic of Cyprus to begin defence equipment production for the first time

The Republic of Cyprus is taking its first steps towards creating its own defence industry and plans to produce military equipment on the island instead of relying entirely on imports.

Greek defence company M Technologies, part of Metlen, and Cypriot company Heutris have signed an agreement to establish a joint venture in the Republic of Cyprus.

The new entity will focus on developing and manufacturing defence systems, as well as creating local production capabilities, transferring technology and training specialists.

As part of the cooperation, the companies plan to participate in the production of military equipment under the European SAFE programme, while also considering projects for the manufacture, maintenance and support of defence equipment.

According to company representatives, the project could create new jobs for specialists, raise the qualifications of local workers and strengthen the island’s industrial base.

Previously, the Republic of Cyprus mainly acquired defence equipment from abroad. Now the authorities and companies expect to gradually develop their own capabilities for the production and maintenance of certain types of equipment.

M Technologies has experience participating in major international defence projects, including the production and support of Patriot systems, Leopard tanks and components for Greek FDI HN (Belharra) frigates. Heutris has been operating in the defence and industrial sector of the Republic of Cyprus for more than 45 years.
