Gen Z Brought Back the Lunch Break Trend: Why Young Employees Started Working More Efficiently
Generation Z has launched a new office trend that has surprised employers. Young employees are increasingly giving up the habit of eating at their desks and are returning to proper lunch breaks. As research shows, this practice not only improves well-being but also helps people work more productively.
According to surveys, more than half of Gen Z representatives regularly set aside about an hour for lunch. At the same time, they try to spend that time away from their workplace — without email, notifications or work calls. Many prefer to have lunch with colleagues, using the break not only to rest but also to socialize in person.
Experts note that such a pause allows the brain to recover after several hours of concentration. As a result, employees return to their tasks more attentive, more focused and less prone to stress. For a generation that grew up amid a constant stream of information and digital noise, such «disconnects» are especially important.
Just a year ago, the situation looked different. Many young professionals skipped lunch or snacked right at their desks while continuing to reply to messages and complete tasks. However, attitudes toward work are gradually changing: Gen Z is increasingly advocating a healthy balance between efficiency and rest.
Employers quickly noticed the new trend and began to support it. Some companies offer employees free lunches, create comfortable relaxation areas and encourage shared breaks. In this way, businesses are trying not only to boost staff productivity, but also to bring people back to the office after several years of the rapid spread of remote work.
Human resources specialists believe the trend could change corporate culture as a whole. If refusing a break used to be seen as a sign of hard work, more and more companies are now coming to the conclusion that quality rest during the workday directly affects results.
It seems Generation Z has found a simple way to work better: sometimes, to increase efficiency, all it takes is to close the laptop on time and have a quiet lunch.
