A family from Paphos left their home because of bird repellents
A family from the village of Emba was forced to leave their own home and move to rented accommodation in another area after linking their health problems to the operation of crow repellent devices. According to the residents, local farmers use ultrasonic and electromagnetic devices to protect their crops. In the opinion of those affected, prolonged exposure to these devices led to ailments, which is why they underwent medical examinations on several occasions. After обращения to various relevant services brought no results, the family decided to move. Information about this appeared in the press on 24 June 2026.
Such ultrasonic and electromagnetic devices are marketed as a humane alternative to poisons, but their effectiveness is often disputed. Against birds, including crows, such emitters are considered dubious, since corvids hear mainly in the same range as humans and are not very sensitive to ultrasound; in agriculture, sound deterrents are more often used for these purposes.
Specialists note that, when used according to the instructions, these devices do not pose a significant risk to humans, and there is no convincing scientific evidence that they are capable of causing serious illnesses. At the same time, hearing thresholds vary from person to person, and prolonged exposure can cause discomfort. At present, a causal link between the operation of the devices and the symptoms of the family from Emba has not been officially confirmed.
