Heavy rain in Nicosia: Fire Service receives 35 calls

Over the past 24 hours, the Cyprus Fire Service received 72 calls for assistance, 35 of which were related to heavy rain in Nicosia. Six crews worked in Engomi, Makedonitissa, Strovolos, Lakatamia and Ayios Dometios. Rescuers pumped water out of flooded basements, cleared storm drains and evacuated cars from flooded roads. The bad weather in Nicosia also caused a tree to fall and damage a parked car. No one was injured.

In addition, a car parked under the canopy of an apartment building caught fire in Aglantzia. The fire was quickly extinguished, but the vehicle sustained damage to the engine compartment and interior.

A joint investigation by the Fire Service and police established that the car fire was caused by arson.
