Strovolos steps up mosquito control after August downpours

The Strovolos Municipality has stepped up mosquito control following heavy August rains. Municipal services are carrying out systematic inspections and targeted treatments in public areas: in ditches, wells, storm drains, gutters and other places where water may accumulate.

Among the priority areas, the municipality named the Parisinos district, areas along Dimitris Christofias Avenue, sections of the Kalogiros riverbed and the GSP Stadium grounds. Mosquito breeding sites are also being found at construction sites and in private swimming pools that are not properly maintained.

Identified breeding sites in public areas are treated with biological products, stagnant water is drained, and containers in which it accumulates are removed. Owners themselves are responsible for breeding sites on private property.

Residents are asked to keep wells, tanks and all water containers covered, repair or replace damaged lids, dispose of old tyres, buckets and other items in which water can collect, and inspect yards, gardens and balconies after rain, removing any standing water immediately. Swimming pools must be maintained in accordance with the rules; otherwise, they can become mosquito breeding grounds.

The municipality is working in coordination with the Ministry of Health and is taking additional measures if cases of West Nile fever are identified among residents.
